DESCRIPTION

This module focuses on distinguishing between literary genre and form.  It discusses the debates over how literature should be categorized and how literary genre is not an innocent process of classification. It also highlights that genre is a constantly changing category influenced by culture and that genre theory facilitates the categorization of literature.

This module will help in understanding poetry as one of the major genres of literature. It highlights the relevance of poetry as a literary genre with socio-cultural functions and foregrounds the similarities and distinction of poetry from other genres. It also deals with the subgenres distinguished on the basis of forms which include lyric, sonnet, elegy, epic, and ballad and narrative. Dramatic subdivision will be discussed under the drama module.
